On Monday night, shortly after my friend Tammy arrived for an overnight visit from Monroe, Betsy called to inform me that she and her friend, Margaret, were at the Brewster Hospital having totaled her car when they hit black ice. They are both fine.
Behind them when they rolled the car was a car full of Search and Rescue people who appeared on the scene almost immediately. They expertly performed actions of First Responders. A man from Twisp, who had also been behind them on the highway, took Betsy's dog, Hannah, and Margaret's cat to his home for safe keeping. Neither of the animals was hurt either. The cat was in a cat-carrier box which prevented her from leaving the vehicle like her dog-friend, Hannah did.
Margaret said they were following behind another car and the road appeared bare and dry. She was doing 10 miles per hour under the speed limit.
A rather lengthy story appeared in the Issaquah Reporter. It always amazes me how little facts get twisted in the news.
Tammy and I left for Brewster Hospital minutes after Betsy called. We arrived before they had been released. Margaret said the policeman figured the car rolled over twice.
Once we had rounded them up we went to the impound yard where we examined the car. I thought it stood the impact of the tumble exceptionally well. We collected the things they wanted for the night and then turned around headed back to the 3-Bell Ranch. Tammy and I were glad for our own training in Search and Rescue and we both kept a watchful eye on them for signs of concussion/ etc.; but they were in good shape.
As Margaret recounted the part of the story where Margaret and Betsy were hanging upside down suspended by their seat belts, Tammy, who has a rather "M*A*S*H sense of humor, started snickering. "Now we know what you were in your last life: a couple of fruit bats!"
